The Orchids of Western Australia

Yellow Sun Orchids

Thelymitra villosa – Custard Orchid

Although this species has similar large yellow flowers to the Leopard Orchid, Thelymitra benthamiana and Freckled Sun Orchid, T. sargentii the distinctive shape of its column and its broad, short leaf should leave little doubt as to its identity, particularly as it is the only Western Australian Sun Orchid to have a hairy leaf.

I noticed in trips to the site as shown of Thelymitri Villiosa (Custard) over two years ago, that the area has sadly been very much decimated by the wild pigs that had scoured the plant areas. We did go for second visit the year after we first found it damaged but it was devoid of many plants and various species that we had seen there earlier. Depending on rains etc this year may take a look again to see if it has improved any but doubtful.
